Shuddhi rumours make Karan Johar furious

Shuddhi rumours make Karan Johar furious

Shuddhi rumours make Karan Johar furious
There were even rumours that he himself was playing the lead in Shuddhi
Filmmaker Karan Johar is furious over reports related to the cast of his production venture Shuddhi.

Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor were finalised as the lead pair of the film, but later Hrithik announced that he is not a part of it anymore.

Karan says a news report that the Krrish 3 star is asking for a profit of the film is false.

"Article insinuating that Hrithik asked for a large percentage of profit for Shuddhi is baseless, untrue and completely uninformed," the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai director tweeted on April 9.

He was also angry over reports saying that he himself is playing the lead in the film.

"I am playing the lead in Shuddhi! Sounds ridiculous? Well as ridiculous as some of the news reports making the rounds!," Karan posted on Twitter on April 9

Andaz Apna Apna, bees saal baad: The cast, then and now

Andaz Apna Apna, bees saal baad: The cast, then and now

Two decades have passed since Amar and Prem set out to win an heiress in marriage. April 11, 1994 was to prove a fateful day at the box office. Rajkumar Santoshi's comedy went up against reigning matinee idol Anil Kapoor's Andaz which released on the same day. And sank without a trace almost instantly.

Not even the combined charm of the young Aamir and Salman could keep Andaz Apna Apna afloat. But what a difference twenty years makes - over time, Amar and Prem have endured, their story has become a cult classic, and is endlessly quoted by devoted fans in a manner that Andaz could never hope to be.

As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Andaz Apna Apna, we take a look at the characters who made the movie so unforgettable and where the actors who played them are today.

Amar-Prem

This is an easy one. Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, who played Amar and Prem, are two of the biggest names in the Hindi film industry today.

After Andaz Apna Apna, Aamir has not really dabbled in a full-fledged comedy while Salman has multiple comedy blockbusters to his name since the '90s. They never worked together again and the rumours of a sequel are the only hope that we have regarding the chance of a reunion.

Fake Raveena/Real Karishma

Raveena Tandon gave one of the most underrated performances of her career in Andaz Apna Apnaplaying heiress Raveena who turns out to actually be the secretary Karishma. Her character provided the impetus for much of the action and the Raveena-Amar romance gave rise to many hilarious situations. Can you forget the song Ello Ello? We thought not.

This film was just another milestone she crossed on her way to becoming the Mast Mast girl in the superhit Mohra which released the same year. That was the turning point for Raveena who never looked back. After ruling the box office for nearly a decade and winning a National Award for Daman, Raveena married distributor Anil Thadani in 2004 and settled down to a life of matrimony and motherhood.

Fake Karishma/Real Raveena

Karisma Kapur plays 'secretary-cum-friend-cum-advisor-cum-cook' Karishma who turns out to be the real Raveena, who arrives in India to find and marry a suitable boy. She switches places with her secretary in order to find a husband who will love her and not her money. She instantly falls for Prem who forces himself to ignore her in his pursuit of the fake Raveena. Their equation creates another bunch of funny moments and the classic song Yeh Raat Aur Yeh Doori.

In 1994, Karisma was two years away from the makeover that would make her a real star but she was already a hit heroine opposite Govinda with whom she had just delivered Raja Babu. But soon enough, she appeared opposite Aamir in Raja Hindustani, opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Dil Toh Pagal Hai and opposite Salman in Biwi No 1. She blossomed into a star capable of carrying a film on her own with strong performances in movies like Shakti and Fiza. She married businessman Sunjay Kapur in 2003 and took a break from acting till 2012's Dangerous Ishhq. She is now often seen as a judge on various reality shows.

Shyam Gopal Bajaj aka Teja/ Ram Gopal Bajaj aka Uncle

Many would argue that it is Paresh Rawal who is the real heart of Andaz Apna Apna and not the Aamir-Salman partnership. In the early '90s, he was still finding his foothold in the film industry and was usually seen playing a baddie.

In Andaz Apna Apna, however, he delivered what was essentially two performances - both pitch perfect - as the delightfully lunatic villain Teja and his straight-laced twin brother, the autocratic crorepati Ram Gopal Bajaj. It was a foreshadowing of one of his later, great comedic roles - Hera Pheri's Baburao Apte. He was last seen in 2013's Himmatwala and and is now embarking on a political career as the BJP candidate from East Ahmedabad this election.

Grandmaster Gogo

As the 'khandaani chor' and nephew of the feared and fabled Mogambo, Shakti Kapoor has less screen time than the others in the main cast but arguably many of the best dialogues. He played the over-the-top dacoit with such ease and humour that Grandmaster Gogo has become synonymous with Indian comedy. Memorabilia, fan groups, social media pages, one liners and more - Gogo has a cult value which stands as tall as the film itself. Grandmaster Gogo is now, has been and will remain the yardstick against which cult characters will be measured in Indian cinema.

Andaz Apna Apna is a turning point for Shakti Kapoor who was transitioning from villains to comical and supporting characters. Indeed, the popularity of Gogo somewhat out strips that of the actor who played him. Though he remains a part of the industry, he is rarely seen onscreen now. He was last seen making waves with his behaviour inside the Bigg Boss house. He didn't win but there were reports that he succeeded in getting on the wrong side of Salman Khan. Be that as it may, he seems to have handed the cinematic baton to daughter Shraddha Kapoor who starred in last year's fit filmAashiqui 2.

Robert (pronounced Raabert)

Sholay's Kaalia takes pride of place on veteran actor Viju Khote's resume but Raabert ("galti se mistake ho gaya") became his second most famous role. The amazing chemistry he shares with fellow henchman Bhalla, great physical comedy andh hilarious dialogues delivered with perfect timing make his character one of the comedy stars in Indian cinema. He is still working today and was last seen in 2010's Golmaal 3. In 2009's Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Viju Khote's character was also called Robert.

Bhalla

Shehzad Khan, who portrayed the henchman Bhalla, utilized a comic version of the style and antics of Loin, the legendary screen villain his father Ajit created. For Shehzad, this became his most recognized character. The team of Bhalla and Raabert is right up there with other famous bad guy duos like Mr India's Daga and Teja.

Shehzaad Khan, who made his debut in Aamir's breakthrough movie Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, appeared in films like Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and TV serials like Shaka Laka Boom Boom but has never been able to repeat his Andaz Apna Apna success.

Govinda and Juhi Chawla

Two stars who played their real life selves in Aamir's dream sequence in the movie. Their "Aa gale lag ja" scene is one of the most hilarious spots in the movie. Juhi, who was on a meteoric rise at the time, continued her ascent to super stardom and remained one of the top actresses through the '90s. She married industrialist Jay Mehta in 1997 at the prime of her career and has continued working sporadically in films like Jhankaar Beats and this year's Gulaab Gang.

Govinda too climbed to the top of the Bollywood charts and reigned as the Hero No 1 of tinsel town for some time. His particular brand of David Dhawan-directed comedy, uninhibited dancing and rainbow-hued wardrobe made him the stuff of Bollywood folklore. Till date, he is considered a benchmark for comedy among lead actors in Bollywood.

Bankelal Bhopali/ Murli Manohar/ Johnny

Three legendary comedians appeared in this film in small but pivotal roles, making for many of Andaz Apna Apna's funniest moments. Jagdeep played Prem's father Bankelal Bihari, tailor by day and destroyer of his son's Bollywood dreams by night. Deven Verma played Amar's father Murli Manohar, a barber who secretly wants to be a bangle-seller. Both of them are conned by their sons into losing everything they own.

The situational comedy involving their characters is hilarious. Mehmood plays Johnny, owner of Wah Wah Productions, who dupes Prem into paying him huge sums of money in lieu of promises to make him a star. Wah Wah Productions is a reference to Mehmood's 1966 hit comedy Pyar Kiye Jaa in which he also played an aspiring filmmaker with a production house called Wah Wah.

While Mehmood died in 2003, Jagdeep and Deven Verma are alive, though they no longer appear on the silver screen. Deven Verma reunited with Karisma Kapur in 1997's Dil Toh Pagal Hai.

Andaz Apna Apna@20: Aila! Sachin Tendulkar was at the mahurat

Cricket hero Sachin Tendulkar was there when now cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna was being made 20 years.

In this video of the mahurat of the Rajkumar Santoshi-directed film, a very young Sachin - then just 20 - is spotted with the stars of the film. Dressed in jeans and a white and red T-shirt, Sachin poses with the also very young lead actors - Aamir Khan, Salman, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapur - director Rajkumar Santoshi, actor Shehzad Khan (who played henchman Bhalla) and senior actor Dharmendra who was there to give the clap for the mahurat.

Andaz Apna Apna, which celebrates its 20th birthday today, was a flop when it released on April 11, 1994, defeated at the box office by Anil Kapoor's Andaz. However, over the years it has acquired a 'cult' tag and a devoted following. Sachin's own ascent from rising young star to godly status somewhat matches the steam that Andaz Apna Apna gathered as the years went by.

Santoshi plans a sequel to Andaz Apna Apna by public demand
It's been 20 years since Rajkumar Santoshi's Andaz Apna Apna hit the screens, and the director says the movie's reach, appeal and impact have been way beyond expected.

"Has that film really completed 20 years? Wow! It's reach, appeal and impact have been beyond anything I ever expected," Santoshi said.

The film, starring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon and Shakti Kapoor, didn't fare well when it released. But it's funny one-liners, entertaining drama and melodious songs, have managed to add to its list of fans over the years.

"I still remember when the producer, Vinay Sinha, had come to me with the idea of doing a film with Aamir Khan. Vinay-ji used to look after Aamir's work. He convinced me to do film with him through my stomach. I remember he had brought the most delicious food for me.

"He suggested we do something different with Aamir. I had just done two back-to-back serious filmsGhayal and Damini. We decided, why not a comedy? Little did we know that the movie would turn out to be such a laugh riot during shooting and after release," Santoshi said.

It was decided that Santoshi would script a laughathon about two warring buddies, human avatars ofTom & Jerry. After Aamir came on board, Santoshi brought Salman into the picture.

"Both were very big stars by then. They had no problems working together. And during the shooting, they became even better friends. There would be constant laughter on the sets. We would be rolling with laughter on the sets. There was so much laughter that the cameraman would be shaking with mirth while shooting the scenes.

"The camera would shake along with the cameraman. We had to stop the shooting and let the laughter subside," he recounted.

He says all the jokes and gags were worked out beforehand.

"People think Aamir and Salman decided to call themselves Amar and Prem to celebrate the movie 'Amar Prem'. But their names had nothing to do with Shakti Samanta's film. And Aamir's exclamation 'Aila!' and Salman's 'Oui Maa!' were also my idea," said the director.

He says he used to give cues to the actors from behind the camera.

"Even during that sequence where Salman is fed julaab (laxative) and his love-confessions are repeatedly interrupted by his rumbling stomach, that 'gud-gud-gud' sound to Salman's dialogues was being given by me from behind the camera.

"Salman didn't know when and where the 'gud-gud-gud' would be put by me. That added to the scene's unpredictability," he said.

Curiously, Andaz Apna Apna got a lukewarm response from the audience when it released April 11, 1994.

"It was very badly marketed and distributed. Nobody knew the film was coming. We got a below-average opening. But over the years, the film has acquired a cult status. People remember each and every dialogue of the movie, just as they remember every dialogue of 'Mughal-e-Azam' and 'Sholay'," he said.

Now Santoshi plans a sequel to Andaz Apna Apna, but strictly by public demand.

"I don't believe in creating a franchise by doing sequels or building my own brand. But the demand for a sequel to Andaz Apna Apna is unbelievable. If I don't do it someone else will. That I won't allow. I've ideas for two sequels. One of them is about Amar and Prem married and their life thereafter," he said.

However, it is unlikely that the sequel to Andaz Apna Apna would bring Aamir and Salman together again.

"Firstly, the economic logistics of bringing Aamir and Salman together in the same film are mindboggling. Secondly, their working methods are very different, even though they're such good friends in real life," he said.

So, Santoshi wants to make Andaz Apna Apna Part 2 with younger actors.

"The world has moved on in 20 years. I see a lot of filmmakers and actors doing an Andaz Apna Apna. I would like to see where the characters have gone after so long," he added.

Katrina worked with David Dhawan and Salman Khan in Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?
A supposedly funny line in David Dhawan's Main Tera Hero where Raju Kher takes a dig at Katrina Kaif's lack of command over the Hindi language had the affable director being confronted with lots of righteous protest.

The director says the actress will take the "bantering quip" sportingly.

"It is just an off-the-cuff remark, a bantering quip in the film, and Katrina is a girl I've known for many years. In fact, she did her first big film Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya? with Salman Khan and me. She can never be offended with what I do. She knows it's all in fun," said Dhawan.

For the first time Dhawan has directed his son Varun in Main Tera Hero, which also stars Nargis Fakhri and Ileana D'Cruz. The film is coming out April 4.

He was recently quoted as saying that his son Varun won't get married until Salman does.

Laughed the filmmaker, "I was just doing some 'masti' with my son. I don't see any likelihood of Salman getting married. So, I was kidding about Varun staying a bachelor."

Raees is a Farhan Akhtar production.
Actress Katrina Kaif has denied being approached to star opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rahul Dholakia's Raees.

There was a buzz that both the stars will be seen together again in the Farhan Akhtar production afterJab Tak Hai Jaan.

"I don't know where this news has come from. There is no such discussion like that till now. There are three films Bang Bang, Phantom and Jagga Jasoos that I am doing right now. I am in talks for two more projects which I can't reveal," Katrina told PTI.

Even Rahul dismissed the report and said, "I don't think so we have approached her. But we will surely finalise the leading lady in a couple of weeks."

Apparently, Katrina has been offered a role in Ashutosh Gowarikar's period film. But the actress was not in mood to reveal any details and she neither denied nor confirmed doing it. "I feel for whatever films I am in discussion with a filmmaker it is not correct to talk about it unless one is doing it because if it doesn't work out then it makes things awkward for the people and the project," she said.

Presently, Katrina is busy with Bang Bang opposite Hrithik Roshan and Jagga Jasoos with rumoured boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor.

The actress has delivered two hit films with Ranbir earlier in Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani and Rajneeti. "Both the films that Ranbir and I did were really liked by people and were successful. It is exciting for me to work with Ranbir again, he is a great actor. Director Anurag Basu is one of the finest directors that we have today and I am privileged to work with him," she said.

Besides, she has Kabir Khan's Phantom with Saif Ali Khan, with whom she is pairing up for the first time.

Rumours were rife that Katrina and Ranbir will get married in 2015.
Katrina Kaif is unfazed by rumours that she has plans to tie the knot with actor Ranbir Kapoor, and says she will continue keeping quiet about her private life.

At an event, the actress was asked to comment on the latest rumours.

She said, "This has come in some newspaper, but there is no such thing. If there is something as such, I will let you know."

Katrina, who was earlier dating Salman, has been guarded about her personal life.

"As far as I am concerned, I have always been the same. I don't speak about my personal life. Now it (any rumour) doesn't bother me. With time, you get used to it. Such small things don't affect," she added.

Meanwhile, Katrina us busy working with her rumoured current beau Ranbir in Jagga Jasoos.

Having co-starred with him in movies like Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Raajneeti, the actress said, "The films that we have done (together) have been extremely special films, not just successful. It's exciting for me as he is a great actor."

"The most exciting thing for me (in Jagga Jasoos) is to work with Anurag Basu as it's important for me to learn from him."

The couple is reportedly set to get married in 2015.
The question we should now be asking of Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor's relationship status is no longer "are they or aren't they" but "will they or won't they," if gossip is to be believed. The actors, long suspected of being a couple, are now rumoured to be considering writing a new chapter to their Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, with a wedding coming up next year.

There has been, of course, no word on this from Katrina and Ranbir themselves - just like they have resolutely refused to admit to a relationship despite being photographed on holiday together in Spain last year. The would-be-groom's mother, actress Neetu Singh, is said to be thrilled and has reportedly already started shopping for the big day.

In the last few months, the rumoured couple have navigated rocky waters in their reported romance. They were said to have broken up after having fought while holidaying in New York over the New Year. Later, they were spotted arriving (separately) for a party at actor Aamir Khan's home, prompting speculation that they could be back together. They spent Valentine's Day apart but then Katrina flew to Sri Lanka where Ranbir was shooting Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet.

A source was later quoted by Mid-day.com saying, "They did not break up in the first place. It was a minor tiff and every other couple goes through this. They have been together for the past four years and they won't break up because of a small argument."

Both have turned down Ashutosh Gowariker’s period film Mohenjo-daro.
Actress Deepika Padukone has apparently said no to director Ashutosh Gowarikar's upcoming film. Says a source, "Deepika is busy shooting for films she has already signed, including Happy New Year, Shuddhi, and Window Seat.

She doesn't have any dates for the next two years and thus had to turn down a role in Ashutosh Gowarikar's film, Mohenjo-daro.

The source adds that the director was keen on signing Deepika for this film. "Deepika is a popular choice among filmmakers now. But the actress has no dates and will be busy shooting for the entire year," says the source.

Rumour also has it that Ashutosh Gowarikar had approached actress Katrina Kaif for the same role. "But she too said no to him on account of a packed schedule," says the source.

On the other hand, Hrithik has given a green signal to the filmmaker; they had last worked together on the period film, Jodha Akbar. It may be pointed out here that Deepika has earlier worked with Ashutosh Gowarikar on the film, Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey. However, the film didn't create any waves at the box office.

Ashutosh Gowarikar was not available for comment while Katrina's manager confirmed that she has no dates to spare for the upcoming film.

Katrina Kaif has reportedly bagged the lead role in Raees starring Shah Rukh Khan. The film was recently in the news when Nawazuddin Siddiqui replaced Farhan Akhtar in the film. Now it has emerged that Katrina has apparently been offered the film.

A source says, "Katrina is in talks to play the lead role. They have been discussing it for a while now, but latest developments suggest that she has given them a go-ahead. This will be her second film with Shah Rukh Khan after Jab Tak Hai Jaan."

Another industry source adds, "Post Bang Bang, Katrina will be working on Jagga Jasoos opposite Ranbir Kapoor, but it looks like this film will be pushed ahead. Besides these two films, she doesn't have too much on her plate as of now, so a lead role in Raees is just right for her."

When contacted, Katrina denied being offered the film. On the other hand, Rahul Dholakia, the film's director, remained unavailable for comment.
